The Secretariat of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) welcomes the reopening of the Gatuna-Katuna border crossing between Rwanda and Uganda at midnight of 31st January 2022, after three years of closure. This border crossing was closed and the cross-border movements of goods, services and people at the Gatuna-Katuna border were stopped following tensions between the two ICGLR member States.
The reopening of the Gatuna border crossing is a visible sign of the normalization of relations between Rwanda and Uganda.
The Secretariat of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region welcomes this important step taken by the two ICGLR Member States and encourages both Rwanda and Uganda to engage with more contacts to strengthen cooperation between them for the benefit of people of the two ICGLR Member States and the whole ICGLR region. Moreover, ICGLR reiterates its request to the other Member States that continue to close their borders to reopen them to facilitate cross-border trade and free movements of goods, services and persons in the Great Lakes Region in conformity with the spirit of the ICGLR Pact on Peace, Security, Stability and Development.
