ICGLR STATEMENT ON THE ATTACKS ON PORT SUDAN

Bujumbura, 6th May 2025: The  Secretariat of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) strongly condemns the drone attacks on Port Sudan on 4th and 6th May 2025, reportedly perpetrated by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This unprovoked assault on both military and civilian infrastructure represents a dangerous escalation that the ICGLR Secretariat continues to monitor with grave concern.

The ICGLR expresses concern that this attack targeted both the Osman Digna military airbase and civilian facilities, including cargo warehouses, which disrupted operations at Port Sudan’s airport, serving as Sudan’s primary point of entry and humanitarian hub.

The ICGLR is also particularly concerned about the targeting of civilian infrastructure and the potential for further attacks that could impact maritime commerce, humanitarian assistance, and the safety of civilians.

The ICGLR further calls on all parties to immediately de-escalate tensions, exercise maximum restraint, and respect human lives and property. We urge all actors to prioritise the protection of civilians and critical infrastructure that serve humanitarian needs during this difficult period.

Finally, the ICGLR stands with the people of Sudan and urges the international community to stand in solidarity with the Sudanese people. ICGLR emphasises on the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict in Sudan through established mediation channels.
