The 10th Extraordinary Summit on Peace and Security was held in Luanda, Republic of Angola on 3rd June 2023. The summit, which was convened at the invitation of His Excellency João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço, President of the Republic of Angola and Chairperson of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR), aimed to address the political and security situation prevailing in the Great Lakes Region, particularly in the Eastern Region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Sudan.
The summit was attended by various heads of state and government representatives, including the President of the DRC, His Excellency Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, and the President of the Central African Republic, His Excellency Faustin Archange Touadera, as well as representatives from regional and international organizations. Ambassador Caholo’s attendance reiterated the significance of ICGLR as an important regional mechanism for facilitating dialogue and cooperation among key regional stakeholders.
During the summit, discussions centred on the urgent need for an immediate cessation of hostilities and expressed solidarity with the victims of conflicts in both countries. The summit recognized the efforts of regional organizations, including the ICGLR, the East African Community (EAC), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), in supporting peace and security initiatives.
The summit concluded by emphasizing the importance of ongoing consultation, coordination, and monitoring to promote peace, security, and stability in the Eastern Region of the DRC and Sudan. It commended President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço for his leadership in efforts to restore peace, security, and political stability in the Great Lakes Region.
