Arrival of the Head of Delegation of the ICGLR Election Observation Mission to the General Elections in the Republic of Kenya 5th August, 2022

WHAT: Arrival of the Head of Mission of the ICGLR Election Observation Mission to the 2022 Kenyan General Elections. Amb. Martins will issue a pre-election statement and preside over the closing ceremony of the training for the observers on election monitoring.

BACKGROUND:
At the invitation of the Government of the Republic of Kenya, the Chairperson of the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region has deployed an ICGLR Election Observation Mission to the 9th August 2022 General Elections in the Republic of Kenya. The Mission is led by H.E. Amb. Ismael Abraão
Gaspar Martins, a Diplomat and former Minister of Finance and of External Trade of the Republic of Angola. The 93 observers drawn form from the ICGLR Member States, the Conference Secretariat, the Levy Mwanawasa Regional Centre for Democracy and Good Governance (LMRC) as well as the ICGLR
Forum of Parliaments have been deployed in the country from 23rd July to 12th August 2022. The deployment is in line with the ICGLR Pact on Security, Stability and Development on the Great Lakes Region adopted by the Heads of State and Government of the ICGLR and the Protocol on Democracy and Good Governance.
The Head of Mission is also expected to preside over the closing ceremony of the training for the ICGLR election observers which will take place from 4th – 5th August 2022. Journalists in Kenya are invited to take part and cover the events of the ICGLR Election Observation Mission.
